Introduction to Raga or Raag Basant

Raag Basant is a Raag for Spring (Basant) season. It is rendered mostly in Madhya and Tar Saptaks. Songs depicting description of the season, besides Shringar and Virah (Separation Pangs) Ras are common.
Basant is the season of spring.  The season of spring (basant) is welcomed all over the country with

immense joy and celebrating.  This is also the time for some special ragas, like raga basant.  There are
many romantic compositions available for such occasions and are sung in raga basant.  This is a very
melodious raga and creates the mood for spring.  It belongs to the Thaat Poorvi,"Thaat Poorvi Lesson" and is a shadave sampooran raga which note Pa is excluded in the Arohi (aroha) while employing the komal Re, Dha and both the Shuddh and Tiver Ma.  Shuddh Ma is vivadi, but allowed for embellishment. It is played from madh to taar saptak. Tanpura tuning is N. Similar ragas are sohni and  poorvi.
